It's always great to see my designs around in real life (in other words off my screen). So I was very pleased to see a photo of the tie and scarf I designed for Fife Society for the Blind using the lovely Penelopi elephant worn in a photo along side Gordon Brown.designjrhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09876696606676418583noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2140612654528719076.post-55245724987247890392014-04-29T11:53:00.000+01:002014-04-29T11:53:00.146+01:00Let's Talk ASN

When I'm accepting a design brief from someone it is important that I understand exactly what the client is looking for. One of my favourite questions to ask is what other brands/ websites do you like? Even if they are unrelated to what the client is branding it still gives me a visual clue about their tastes and their idea of good design.

My other favourite question is what do you not like? When I asked this client both these questions unusually the response included a number of things to avoid due to their prevalence in the sector. I realised these were the icons I would have turned to first and ideas that I have in fact used for other clients in previous work.

But I love a challenge and both the client and I are very pleased with the outcome.
As well as being really busy with client work lately I've also had the opportunity to take a 5 week photography course at Art 4 You Scotland. The tutor was the fine art photographer, Dave Hunt. His explanations of how the camera works were really good and even although I have some experience of taking photographs especially close ups I learned a lot. We spoke a lot about how to capture a subject that is moving, a concept with which I was struggling.
The beautiful weather over the Easter weekend gave me the perfect
opportunity to go walking along the river with my camera and have a play
with what I've learned. I was quite pleased with the results.

Logos are interesting to design. I enjoy the research stage, finding out what the business does and working out how to represent it. No research was required for this logo for the Little Wonders toddler group though. Being a mum myself I am very familiar with the business of toddlers.

I wanted it to be fun and where there are toys there is fun. Not wanting to resort to the primary colours I instead went for a palette of orange, green and yellow. The trio is bright and cheerful but also a little sophisticated to appeal to all the mummies and daddies.

Design is a process. Once I receive a brief my creativity gets to work until I have something to show the client. Thereafter it tends to go back and forth until both of us are completely satisfied.

The work I did for Quest for Success was different. Karen & I always seemed to be on the same page. The concepts to be illustrated were challenging; resistance to change, strengthening personal impact but my brain really enjoyed being stretched. And I'm really pleased with the results. Sticking to the core colours kept them simple yet completely on brand.

Every client is so different and I often have to research to get a feel for the business. My aim is always to make my designs as appropriate and relevant as possible.

In this case no research was required at all. As soon as I was given the brief I had an idea in my head. You may or may not know that I'm a bit of a board game fan.

That's why, I just knew that for advertising a board games event photographs of board game pieces or meeples would appeal to the target audience as well as be bright and colourful to stand out.

So I had a fun little afternoon in my studio photographing all sorts of board games and their meeples. The meeples from Carcassone, a popular euro game, stood out as clear winners. They gave me all the classic board game colours then I added in some hex shapes from board games like Settlers of Catan et voila!

So if you're around Stirling on the 9th of November pop into Common Ground Games, play some games and learn about social sciences. (http://www.stir.ac.uk/social-science/news/games/)

The colour palette was based around the two colours of the logo. I added three more colours to add interest but always bearing in mind the contrast.

When it came to the banners for the three strands of the charity I decided to distinguish them by colour. The three main colours were allocated to the different strands but everything else about the banners looked identical.
The inspiration for the elephant was an old collecting can they had which featured a pink elephant.

As the illustration was going to be printed on a tie and a scarf it had to be really simple but also include that all important striped t-shirt.

So here she is, the new charity mascot for Fife Society for the Blind.
It's a skill in itself representing large quantities of information in a visually appealing way.

After receiving many compliments about my hot air balloon poster I stuck to the same format when I was asked to design another one. This time the subject was volunteering and looked at urban and rural differences in participation.

The image of a plant poking through concrete represents both the urban and rural localities referenced in the paper.
There were several things that I had to bear in mind when working on the rebrand for the charity Fife Society for the Blind. Not only did I want the branding to look good but everything also had to be readable by the users.

Amongst other things I had to consider the colour contrast for the logo, the clarity of the typeface and the crop of the photos. Within the restrictions set it was no easy task to bring the look bang up to date.

All three branches of the charity were to look the same but with different names and taglines. The two-colour palette of blue and orange kept it simple but also striking. The logo can be used with and without the added taglines and the mark can also be used on its own making it very versatile.
The original leaflet was designed by me about 6 years ago while I was still a graphic design student.

While the leaflet looked pretty good and certainly better than anything they had previously there was a lot I had learned even in a few years of working in the industry.

This is how the cover looked in 2007 -
This is the case when I was asked to create a brand for new forensic accountancy business, Willis Wood.

Fiona approached me fully prepared with plenty of ideas and a great strapline "A service tailored to you". I also teamed up with Abeoweb for the first time to create the website leaving me with more time to focus on the design side.

The logo had to be sophisticated and classy in order to appeal to the prospective clients - lawyers and accountants. I'd been wanting to use a serif typeface for a while but it had not seemed appropriate for any previous projects.

I then used an enlarged version of the logo "pie-chart" to add interest to the business card, headed paper and website design.

The graphics took a slightly unusual route for the brochure and website. The tagline made me look closer at the tailored suits worn by the target audience. Photos of these representing the different areas gave the brand a modern yet sharp look with just a little bit of femininity.
More often than not I encounter confused looks when I say I'm a graphic designer and I design for print. Not today though. I was able to point to the banner in the corner and say I did that! That's the sort of thing I'm talking about.

I don't very often get in front of the camera but here I am beside the banner stand with my client, Helen Warburton(left).

It's the social media site that everyone's talking about and the place to be if you're creative. For those of you not in the know, it's a site where you can gather images/ideas together from all over the web onto virtual mood boards.

Visit at your own risk as you may lose many hours scrolling through all the pretty things. A veritable endless magazine to be flicked through. For me it's a great tool for staying creative.

My only hesitation in using it for client work is that all my boards are public and design for a client seems like a more private process. There are a few alternatives out there but I've not found any with the wealth of great images/ideas that there are on pinterest.

So you can check out all the stuff I'm interested in over at pinterest and you'll not see anything you shouldn't at juxtapost.
It was a first for me too as I was asked to design the cover image.

It's different from a paper book cover as it takes a lot less information and has to be readable at a very small size. I used the thumbnail size on Amazon as a guide when designing so that the title could be read the smallest.
My recent presentation on type for business has re-ignited my passion for all things type. As an exercise I asked everyone to spend a bit of time looking for examples of great type or even just give type a bit more thought.
When writing my last post I noticed that I was about to reach 100 posts. In recognition of the point of this blog (yes there is a point even although it has maybe wandered off recently) - it started out as a showcase of my creative experiments - I created this illustration using some old elements along with some new. Happy 100 to me - here's to many more of my random experiments! designjrhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09876696606676418583noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2140612654528719076.post-39566114904059430472012-08-27T16:40:00.003+01:002012-08-27T16:40:50.741+01:00Mark Wallinger at the Baltic

On a recent trip to Newcastle I visited the Baltic gallery. One of the main exhibitions was by Mark Wallinger a former Turner prize winner. His work included a numbered wall and 65,536 stones laid out on chess boards.

I particularly liked his explanation of the giant "I" on the front of the building. A self-portrait in Times New Roman which is as simple as it is large. Wonder which typeface others would consider to represent themself? designjrhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09876696606676418583noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2140612654528719076.post-25504588119861245002012-08-23T16:52:00.001+01:002012-08-23T17:00:34.941+01:00Read but not seen
This week I've been sharing some of my design knowledge with the ladies over at E-LLE. It was fun sharing a few basics about typography to a group of women who will hopefully find it useful for their businesses.

So here's my presentation slides if anyone has anything to add or to ask about the subject of typography I'd love to hear from you in the comments box below. And if it's whetted your appetite for type head over to my type pinterest board to see some fine examples!

As the summer holidays approach it's time for an update to the design calendar. The month of June signals the end of free reign on design projects for students and an opportunity to impress the industry before embarking on their chosen careers.

So for design inspiration I'd recommend a visit to Edinburgh Telford's College graduate show which is taking place from 13th to 17th June at the Dovecot studios.

And then for relaxation packing a tent and some marshmallows to toast on the campfire somewhere in the Scottish countryside.
It seems like just yesterday that I was asked to sit in on the pitches for the design work for the Bumblebee Conservation Trust's brand and yet here it is -

Red Stone have done a great job at bringing the look bang up to date but also keeping it as scientifically realistic as design allows. Plus how cute is the Bee Kind bee?
